Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the worlds’ most admired and awarded single malt whiskies. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character. An obsession with excellence has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding, by Alexander Reid, on a plateau above the river Spey in north-east Scotland.

In 2018, The Macallan unveiled its new £140 million distillery and visitor experience on its Speyside estate, increasing investment in whisky, warehousing and in The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks. The striking contemporary architecture, cut into the slope of the land, takes its cues from ancient Scottish hills. It stands nearby Easter Elchies House, the Highland Manor built in 1700 which has been The Macallan’s spiritual home since

The new distillery marks an important milestone, recognising the significant journey of The Macallan and the unrivalled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit since 1824. Each sip of The Macallan is a truly sensorial experience with a complex myriad of flavours that might mingle with each of their senses, from taste to scent, to mouthfeel and natural colour.  Each spirit with its own distinct character, unique to that expression within The Macallan portfolio. Each sensorial experience is underpinned by the foundational robust and full-bodied new make spirit produced from their curiously small copper stills.  During maturation, the spirit then extracts rich fruity, sweet and spicy flavours from their exceptional sherry seasoned oak cask.

The International Masterclass Experience begins with The Macallan Double Cask Range

The Macallan Double Cask range celebrates the coming together of two styles to bring a unique character to the fore, underpinned by familiar flavours of The Macallan.  The Macallan Double Cask range has a prominent, unmistakable sweetness, which is attributed to the higher proportion of American oak sherry-seasoned casks used for maturation.  Mastery of this union results in a perfect partnership of both sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks.  Combined, this creates a range with extraordinary tasting notes of vanilla and fresh fruit.

Impression of flavour from The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team: Reminds me of the family sitting around the kitchen table, waiting impatiently for Mums upside-down cake to emerge from the oven – a brilliantly glazed light sponge, covered in pineapples, glace cherries, raisins and treacle, with just a hint of cinnamon.

Key flavours: Fudge, citrus and soft spice

The International Masterclass Experience continues with The Macallan A Night On Earth In Scotland

The Macallan has captured the universal feeling of optimism and bonding at New Year with A Night On Earth In Scotland, a unique single malt whisky. Forming part of a limited-edition gifting series, A Night On Earth In Scotland is a collaboration with acclaimed Japanese-French illustrator Erica Dorn, whose artwork has featured in leading director Wes Anderson’s films.

Inspired by Hogmanay, the traditional Scottish New Year’s Eve celebration, the whisky has a natural colour of warm ember and pays tribute to the role of fire at New Year. The expression’s vanilla sweetness references traditional shortbread biscuits, often gifted and eaten at Hogmanay, while notes of dried orange and spice represent the flavours and aromas that fill homes across Speyside, and throughout Scotland, during the festive season.

Encased in a vibrant presentation box, A Night On Earth In Scotland’s colourful packaging design has been created by Erica Dorn with a particular journey in mind: red for merriment, vitality, good fortune and joy; blue, reminiscent of a winter evening in Scotland, in all its peace and stillness; and amber – in tribute to the sweet aromas of soft butter and freshly baked shortbread which inspired The Macallan in the creation of this whisky.

A Night On Earth In Scotland was crafted from a selection of The Macallan’s exceptional sherry seasoned American and European oak casks, along with American ex-bourbon barrels to deliver its rich, sweet shortbread-like character. With a soft, velvety mouthfeel, it showcases the skill of the Whisky Mastery Team, and The Macallan’s dedication to incomparable craftsmanship and uncompromised excellence.

The International Masterclass Experience concludes with The Macallan Rare Cask 2023

It is crafted from only the finest and rarest sherry seasoned oak casks, unearthed by The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team using their knowledge, skill, passion, and creativity in their quest to seek out the extraordinary.
