Join the Rum Revolution with Whistler Rum at Whisky & Spirits Live

By Whisky Live Staff 06-10-2018

#RethinkRum with Whistler Rum at Whisky & Spirits Live on from 31 October – 2 November 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre!

Whistler Rum is truly a unique and 100% African creation!

African Style rum has five simple rules:

  • The rum must be produced in Africa.
  • The rum must be produced in equipment designed and built in Africa.
  • The rum must be distilled by a born and bred African.
  • The rum must be distilled from locally sourced ingredients.
  • The fermentables can only be sugar cane or sugar cane by-products.
  • The rum must be aged in barrels that previously matured other African alcohol-based products.

Where it began

The South African rum revolution started on a farm along the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Henneman in the Free Sate - the home of Whistler Rum, now the biggest rum distillery in the country. Whistler, a small-batch rum, is as original as its drinkers – the “Whistlers,” people who do things differently. They tackle the “why’s?” of life with “why not’s, zig when everyone zags, and “Whistle their own tune”. Leading the resurrection of rum, brothers Trevor and Leon Bruns and Stephan De Vos started planning the production of a rum in 2015.

By the end of 2015, they had purchased a small 50l still with the objective of testing rum recipes.

Early in 2016, Trevor and Leon quit their respective jobs to focus all their time on designing and building a rum distillery. As part of the planning process, they attended a rum course presented by Luis Ayala at the Moonshine University in Kentucky, USA. Upon completion of the course, Stephan joined them at the Miami rum fest. The Miami rum fest was the first stop in a five-day road trip to New Orleans. On the way, the trio visited and met the owners of Siesta Key, Wicked Dolphin, Bayou and Kicking Mule. Through the visits to these rum distilleries they gained valuable insights into the do’s and don’ts of a successful rum brand and distillery.

Back in South Africa, the distillery designs where finalised and construction started. By January 2017 the distillery was completed, and the first barrels were filled. In October 2017, Whistler African style rum was bottled in one-of-a-kind, especially made bottles, inspired by the steam whistle.
