There's been an undeniable boom in Irish Whiskey and huge interest in craft beer, globally and DIT's new BSc course aims to support the drinks industry's plans to make Ireland not only a key producer of spirits and beers, but also a global research, development and innovation leader.
If you are considering signing up, be warned as it isn't only about tasting the liquid: the course aims to give students in-depth scientific and engineering knowledge, while also including new product development. The syllabus structure and content has been designed with the assistance of programme partners, Diageo and Irish Distillers.
An article published in the Irish Times says, "By 2025, the brewing and distilling sector in Ireland is expected to create 23 000 new jobs, to increase exports by 85% to a value of €19 billion and its value addition to the economy by 70% to over €13 billion, according to the Food Wise 2025 strategy produced by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine."
The course begins this month and students can look forward to visiting Diageo's St James Gate pilot brewery, focused on small batch brewing.
