Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) is the official destination marketing organisation (DMO) of the Gauteng City Region. It is an entity of the provincial government charged with generating leisure and business travel demand. This it does through various initiatives that seek to position the golden city region as the destination of choice leisure travellers and global, regional and national events. GTA partners with product owners, tour operators, hostel groups, tourism bodies, the media, and national and local spheres of government.

Through these partnerships, it endeavours to provide a wide-range of world-class, customer–focused and vibrant visitor experiences, and – in the process – grow the visitor economy and create employment opportunities in the sector. Tourism is gaining momentum as key driver of economic growth in Gauteng and South Africa at large.

The National Development Plan and the National Tourism Sector Strategy recognise this fact. So too does the Gauteng City Region Economic Development Plan 2030 and Gauteng Tourism Sector Strategy. The plan advocates focussed attention on growing the visitor economy while the strategy articulates the essential elements necessary for achieving this objective. These elements, all of which fall under the ambit of the mandate of GTA as the DMO of the city to region, include brand management, international tourism trade destination marketing and domestic tourism offering promotion. Others are niche experience packaging, visitor information services management, and event bidding and hosting.
